Berta Pohl. Ottoman & Storage Ottoman. May 08th , 2020.
When I first started looking for an ottoman for my craft space I knew that I wanted a square one so that at least got the shape I was looking for out of the way, or so I thought. Square is definitely an easy enough shape to center on, but the pieces you’ll find will come in all sizes, heights, and designs.
Throughout the history of this household item, it would take on many different forms, and wind up significantly changed from its initial design which would often dominate three-quarters of the walls in a room. Today ottomans are usually found in the form of footstools and, less frequently, large benches that can double as armless, backless couches.
While the ottoman was once a centerpiece in any room, covering up to three-quarters of the available wall space in its original design, it’s humbler footstool design is no less respected or coveted in the modern age. Throughout history, multiple cultures have embraced this piece of furniture, and I was about to do some embracing of my own.
The only storage that’s available in ottoman couches of this type is going to be what space is available under the assembled ottoman couch since the internal space will be used for additional cushioning.
There have been many iterations of the handy ottoman since it was first introduced by the Ottoman Empire in 1299, and one of the favorite uses for them was as a footstool paired with a comfortable chair.
Round ottomans are particularly good at packing a lot of comfort and versatility into a small frame, and they look good doing it. A round ottoman adds depth and dimension to a room that’s in danger of succumbing to a grid pattern. Place a round ottoman in a small conversation nook to create a communal focal point. Better yet, combine one with a round couch for a truly unique, contemporary look.
Like any furnishing selection, you’re going to want to try to find one that accommodates your space, while also fitting the design theme you have going on. Thankfully convertible ottoman couches come in as many different shades and materials as traditional ottomans, so you should have no shortage of options in this department.
